Sirogojno: The Open Air Village Museum Near Zlatibor

Sirogojno is a village about 25 kilometers from Zlatibor, on the slopes of Cigota. Most people go for the Old Village Museum, an open air collection of real houses and farm buildings brought together to show how people lived on the mountain. It is a calm, easy visit, good for a half day and fine in cooler months like April.
The Old Village Museum
The museum is built as a working mountain hamlet. Log houses with steep shingle roofs sit around yards, with dairy huts, barns, a bakery, and a small church nearby. You walk from one to the next at your own pace. Inside, the rooms are set up with the old furniture, tools, and textiles, so you see where a family cooked, slept, and stored food for winter.
What stands out is the building itself. These are the tall, dark timber houses of the Zlatibor region, made to hold heat and shed snow. Signs explain the layout, and guides are around if you want more.
- Original log houses and farm buildings.
- Rooms furnished as they were actually used.
- A dairy, a bakery, and a small wooden church.
- A restaurant on site with local dishes.
The Sirogojno knitwear
Sirogojno is also known for wool. Women here knit heavy sweaters with folk patterns, a craft that grew into a recognized brand decades ago and still runs from the village. You can see and buy the knitwear on site. The thick pullovers make sense once you have felt a mountain evening.
Getting there and when to go
By car it is a straightforward drive from Zlatibor toward Sirogojno, well signed the whole way, about 30 to 40 minutes. Buses run too but less often, so check the times. Spring and autumn are pleasant and quiet. In April bring a jacket, since the village sits higher and holds the chill.
It pairs well with Stopica Cave, which is on the same side of the mountain. If you are based at Apartman Bolero, you can do the museum in the morning and the cave after lunch without rushing.
