Gostilje Waterfall: A Simple Guide From Zlatibor

Gostilje Waterfall: A Simple Guide From Zlatibor

Gostilje waterfall is one of the easier outdoor trips you can make from Zlatibor. The main fall drops about 20 meters over a rock face in the village of Gostilje, roughly 20 km from the Zlatibor center. Beech and pine forest surrounds the whole gorge, so even on a hot afternoon the air near the water stays cool and damp.

The path is arranged and about 450 meters long. Wooden stairs take you down to the base of the fall, where most people stop for photos and to feel the spray. It is not a hard walk, but you do go down and then back up, so keep that in mind if you are travelling with small children or anyone who tires on stairs.

Getting there and what to wear

The simplest way is by car. From the center of Zlatibor it takes about 25 to 30 minutes along a paved road that narrows near the village. There is parking close to the entrance, and from there you follow the marked path down. A small entrance fee applies in the main season.

The stone and wooden steps get wet and slick from the mist, so shoes with grip matter more than anything else here. A few practical notes:

  • Wear closed shoes with a real sole, not flip flops
  • Bring water and a light layer, it is cooler by the fall
  • Go on a weekday morning if you can, summer weekends get crowded
  • Watch children on the lower platforms, the rocks are slippery

Make it a full day

Gostilje sits close to two other well known stops, so it is easy to combine them. Stopica Cave is a short drive away and stays cool inside all year, which is a nice contrast on a hot day. The old village of Sirogojno, with its open air museum of traditional houses, is also nearby and works well as a slower afternoon stop after the waterfall.

We host guests at Apartman Bolero in Zlatibor, about 500 m from the center with a closed garage, and Gostilje is one of the trips people ask about most. If you base yourself here you can leave early, see the waterfall before the crowds, and still be back for lunch or a rest before the next stop.
